SPERM ALLERGY? - Symptoms and Cure

Sperm allergy, sometimes called semen allergy or seminal plasma hypersensitivity is a rare allergic reaction to
protein found in the man’s semen. Semen is the natural fluid produced by the male reproductive system which can be found in a jelly-like or liquefied state. It is heavily concentrated with protein and sugar alongside other nutrients. The primary function of this fluid is to transport SPERM to the female reproductive system.

Sperm allergy is fairly rare but affects 20,000 to 40,000 women in America. It is less common but possible for men to be allergic to sperm. Some men are even allergic to their own sperm.

                          symptoms

Symptoms of Sperm allergy usually start 10 to 30 minutes after contact with sperm and last for hours or days. It may be localized, affecting only area of contact or it can affect whole body.

Common symptoms include Redness, swelling, pain, itching and burning sensation at vaginal area and also hives, difficulty breathing, anaphylaxis, a life threatening allergic reaction. It is mostly mistaken to vaginitis or different STDs like Herpes.

Sperm Allergy can be frustrating to couples, complicating matters for those who wish to conceive, since this cannot happen through protected sexual intercourse. Sperm allergy does not affect the woman’s fertility as there are other ways to achieve pregnancy, such as artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization (IVF) after sperm is washed.

Treatment

The best way to treat Sperm allergy is by minimal contact with semen which can be achieved by the use of Condoms. Also Desensitization with the man’s semen can be applied that is to create serum from the man’s semen and use it as vaccine to immunize the affected woman.

According to David J. Resnick, MD, acting director of the allergy division of New York Presbyterian Hospital. says Sperm allergy can be treated through

-  Allergy shots containing small doses of the male partner's semen.

- The other is a technique called intravaginal seminal graded challenge.

Nevertheless, Women having this allergy are advised to visit a gynecologist or an allergist to get the appropriate treatment
